About
Mathias Kniepeiss
Photographer, digital artist and creative director from Austria. More than thirty years behind the computer, more than twenty years behind the camera, from the Formula One pit lane to costume stagings in Venice.
Born in Graz, Austria in 1980, I grew up in a family of art lovers. Our house was full of works by Egon Schiele, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí and many others. At the age of seven I started to paint and spent years trying to copy the masterpieces around me. One of my earliest memories is sitting in a gallery, trying to understand why visitors were so fascinated by the water lilies of a certain „Monet“.
Even as a teenager I was fascinated by new innovations and quickly tried to combine my creativity with new technology. After studying graphic design at school I worked several years as a designer for various companies, creating layouts for websites, logos, posters, brochures, fashion and much more.
At the age of 23 I turned one of my greatest hobbies into my profession: photography. For many years I learned from great photographers across different fields. I travelled the world and worked, among other things, as team photographer for Red Bull Racing in Formula One and as official photographer of the Life Ball for Getty Images.
At the age of 32 I began to realise my own projects as an art director. For this work I was awarded at Art Basel Miami and the Venice Biennale and was accepted into the Sony Europe Imaging Ambassador Program. Later I had the pleasure of working with renowned artists such as Andreas Gursky, Erwin Wurm and Herbert Brandl.
Since 2020 I have been working intensively with deep learning. What began as curiosity has long become a tool of its own. I use it to explore worlds that exist in front of no camera, and to reach images that used to stay an idea in my head. Doors have opened that I did not know existed for twenty years.
Technology enables the creative mind to do things that would not be possible without it.
