Goddesses of the Arts I
Fusion Art
Fusion Art is a hybrid process of generative AI and digital collage by hand. The AI supplies the raw material: dozens of image variations per work. The work itself emerges afterwards, layer by layer, through selecting, isolating, superimposing and discarding. The model supplies the vocabulary. The composition and every decision about what stays and what disappears are the artist’s.
Goddesses of the Arts
For as long as there has been art, artists have said they did not make their work alone. The Greeks called on the Muses, others spoke of God, of inspiration, of a force that passed through them. Whether that force exists hardly matters. The belief in it works: it gives footing, direction, and the courage to begin.
The images show these forces as a gathering. Figures of antiquity stand and sit close together, in robes, with spear and helmet, among columns and plinths. These are no gentle muses: whoever inspires also demands. The colours are those of old paper and fresco, cream, gold and sepia. The figures are translucent, dissolving at the edges and sliding into one another. They are present and yet cannot be grasped, like an inspiration.
The series asks the old question of where a work comes from, using a new process. Here, too, something other than the artist has had its say: a model that supplied the vocabulary. Perhaps the machine is only the latest name for what used to be called the Muse. The decision, as always, was made by a human.
